Wastewater in Mining – Canadian German Roundtable

Wastewater in Mining – Canadian German Roundtable

Join us for the chance to connect directly with leading businesses, researchers, policy
makers as well as representatives from municipalities and non-governmental institutions.
Speakers from Canada and Germany will explore the themes of technologies for treating
wastewater in mining, environmental control and regulations. They will develop a shared
understanding of the key drivers; and importantly, the event will enable participants to
engage directly with each other, to explore partnerships for joint innovation, trade, and

The effects of untreated mine wastewater can be very harmful to the environment. The
effluent regulations for metal and diamond mining serve to protect fish and fish habitats
by regulating the discharge of mine effluent into waters. Since 2017, operators of metal
and diamond mines have had to comply with stricter limits for contaminated materials. By
June 1, 2021, metal and diamond mines must comply with the revised Metal and Diamond
Mining Effluent Regulations (MDMER) released by the Canadian federal government.
These revised guidelines – originally known as the MMER or Metal Mining Effluent
Regulations – will affect more than 100 metal and diamond mines in Canada and will have
significant effects on mine operators that will need to make changes such as conducting
assimilative capacity studies, upgrading treatment plants, and treating for new parameters
that were not part of the previous regulations (e.g., ammonia combined with water). The
Canadian government has announced that it will step up controls in this area in the future.

The event opens with a brief plenary to provide a strategic overview, before moving into
three simultaneous discussions exploring each of the main themes (see below). After
concluding remarks, any participants who wish to, will be able to move into virtual meeting
rooms for one-to-one. All sessions and meetings will be hosted virtually on MS Teams.

1. Solutions for Wastewater Minimization and Reuse in Mining
The objective of the workshop is to discuss current approaches for the reduction of
wastewater generation and process optimization as well as the application and
requirements for new technologies for reducing and reusing wastewater in the mining

2. Wastewater: National and International Regulations and Frameworks
Representatives from Canada and Germany discuss challenges in coordinating and
regulating wastewater and mining, considering the suitability of potential solutions for the
Canadian and German context, as well as developing proposals for improving existing regulations and frameworks
(e.g Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations, Towards Sustainable Mining).

3. Wastewater and Ecosystem Restoration
The aim of the workshop is to elaborate the possibilities of sustainable and
environmentally sound wastewater management and treatment in regions with
active mining as well as in former mining regions in an interdisciplinary context
(municipalities, mining operators, indigenous communities).
